Additional registration for courses

Dear Students,

In connection with emerging inquiries about adding more students to the class lists, on which registration is closed due to the lack of places, I would like to kindly inform you that requests for additional registrations will be considered after October 21, when the possibility of registering for courses is closed for students. Before the deadline, students can add themselves to the lists if a place becomes available. Applications for additional registrations will be considered in the order of applications.

After October 21, the student applying to be added to the list must apply with a request to be added to the closed list, enclosing in the attachment the consent of the tutor to admit the student (consent may be given in the form of an e-mail sent from the lecturer’s official account).

Yours faithfully,

Young Researchers in Archaeometry Workshop (5-6 September 2022, online)

We are happy to announce the 5th workshop “Young Researchers in Archaeometry” that will be held at the online on 5-6 September 2022. Following our tradition, the meeting welcomes early career researchers (master, PhD, post-doc) with a focus on topics intersecting natural science, cultural heritage studies and archaeology.

As promoted in the previous editions, the aim of the workshop is to offer ECRs an interdisciplinary platform for mutual exchange and networking. We want to provide a relaxed atmosphere to promote the development and use of scientific techniques through presentations and discussions. The online format opens the workshop series for people from all over the world and with limited travel funds.
We welcome contributions involving natural sciences related to archaeometry including all types of objects and materials related with human activities with a specific emphasis on archaeological or anthropological topics. Researchers in the field of archaeology, art history, anthropology, biology, chemistry, conservation, cultural heritage, earth science, material science, medicine, physics are encouraged to propose an oral.

Because the interest in online tutorials last year was huge, we are happy to announce that we can provide pre-recorded tutorials this year! Provided by renowned experts, they tackle different topics and methods in the field.

250 word abstracts (in English) for presentations (15 min + 5 min discussion) can be submitted until July 3rd.

Registration without talk or presentation is open from mid of July until the workshop. Submission of an abstract will automatically register the presenting author.

The online participation for the workshop is FREE.

We are looking forward to welcoming you all at the YRA2022!

The Archeo-oriental Seminar – lecture of dr. Karel Innemée

We have the pleasure invite you to the archeo-oriental seminar on which dr. Karel Innemée (Faculty of Humanities, University of Amsterdam) will give a lecture on “The non-verbal communication of costumes of authority”.
The lecture will be held on Monday (May 30) at 11:30 AM.

Link to the Zoom Meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83327401035qr

Abstract:
“Costumes of wordly and religious leaders have multiple layers of meaning. Firstly, there is the aspect of ‘dress to impress’, often by making the person look larger than others. Secondly, there are ways of ‘reading’ the costume and its details. For the outsider it will be clear that he/she is dealing with a king, queen or bishop, but the insiders will be able to distinguish more details, hidden in attributes and decorations. How far are we, as researchers, able to go into this non-verbal language of costumes of authority? A case study from Nubia as a foretaste of a new research project.”

Dr hab. Dobrochna Zielińska at the Archaeo-Oriental Seminar

We invite you on Monday (09 May) at 11:30 AM to the Archaeo-Oriental Seminar, where dr hab. Dobrochna Zielińska (from the Faculty of Archaeology) will give a lecture on “Nubian Authorities in Painted Church Decoration”.
Abstract:
Monumental representations of Nubian authorities are one of the most characteristic features of Nubian art. This tradition has been also continued in Medieval Nubia and portrait representations of most important figures for the kingdom of Makuria became part of the iconographical programme in Nubian churches. This presentation will be an overview of monuments where such representations are preserved. Also places in the sacral interiors where these portraits were located will be discussed, as well as character of these representations. The state of research on this topic will be presented, as well as the analysis that initiated a new project developed at the University of Warsaw.

May 4 and 5 – days free from classes

Dear students, dear Colleagues,

After consultations with the dean’s team and taking into account the exceptionally long summer semester in the current academic year, I decided to announce May 4 and 5 days free from classes and lectures at the Faculty of Archeology of the University of Warsaw (note! This does not apply to classes conducted outside the faculty, such as OGUN, foreign language courses and sports). I hope that this will allow you to enjoy the “Juwenalia” on May 6 and 7 (also days free from classes) and after the extended May weekend you will return to learning with enthusiasm.

Yours faithfully,

Interdisciplinary international conference „Echoes of Antiquity” – call for applications

The Faculty of Archaeology of the University of Warsaw, The Royal Łazienki Museum, and The University of Warsaw Museum kindly invite specialists and young researchers from various disciplines to take part in an interdisciplinary international conference „Echoes of Antiquity” at the University of Warsaw.

The conference will be held on 22-24th June, if the situation allows, in offline mode. We invite scholars whose research concerns the tradition of ancient art and broad reception of antiquity in disciplines such as archaeology, history, history of art, cultural studies, and literary studies but not limited only to these. The proceedings will be organised in three panels, each of them devoted to a different aspect: collections of plaster casts, reception of Antiquity in city landscape and architecture, and the Antiquity in modern culture. Two days of proceedings will be followed by a tour in Warsaw, focusing on the places with the richest references to the ancient culture. We are also happy to announce that proceedings in every panel will be opened by the keynote speeches delivered by recognized specialists from various institutions. Proposals must be written in English and submitted to conference.echoes@gmail.com by 11th April 2022. Submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee which will select successful applicants. No fee is required. Further information and abstract template available: (2) Echoes of Antiquity. International interdisciplinary conference | Facebook

Organizational committee: Monika Dunajko (University of Warsaw), Emilia Jastrzębska (Royal Łazienki Museum), Michał Kuźmiński (University of Warsaw).
