Pursuant to the Rules of Study at the University of Warsaw, an Individual Organisation of Studies (IOS) is granted to students if they belong to one of the following groups (§ 26(4) of the Rules of Study):
1) students achieving outstanding learning outcomes;
2) students participating in research works not included in the study plan;
3) students with outstanding sport achievements, who represent the University;
4) students with outstanding cultural or artistic achievements;
5) students referred to study at another domestic or foreign university or institution;
6) students pursuing studies in more than one field;
7) disabled students or students suffering from a chronic illness;
8) pregnant students and students who are parents;
9) students enrolled to studies as a result of the confirmation of learning outcomes;
10) in justified instances other than listed in points 1-9, including those related to fortuitous events pertaining to the student.
The Individual Organisation of Studies may take the following forms (§ 26(3)):
1) individual study curriculum implemented in cooperation with the academic tutor; or
2) individual study plan; or
3) individual process and time frame for obtaining course credits; or
4) individual study process for disabled students or students suffering from a chronic illness.
An IOS involving an individual study programme (point 1) requires the appointment of an academic supervisor for the student and the development of an individual study programme, which is then reviewed by the supervisor. The individual study programme must meet the requirements arising from the learning outcomes defined for the degree programme. The requirement to appoint a supervisor does not apply to students whose individual study programme is related to being referred to study at another domestic or foreign university or institution.
An individual study plan (point 2) may include consent to transfer courses between stages of study. If the Vice-Dean for Student Affairs grants consent for the transfer of courses, failure to complete them during the stage of study specified in the study programme does not result in the charging of a fee related to conditional year completion. A student applying for an individual study plan is required to attach to the application submitted via the USOS system an IOS schedule containing information on the courses for which the student is requesting a postponement of completion.
An individual mode and/or deadline for course completion requires the submission of IOS schedule containing a list of courses to which the change will apply, together with a description of the scope of the requested change (e.g. permission for an increased number of absences, consent to complete classes other than those specified in the course syllabus, etc.). The student is required to obtain the consent of the course instructor for the requested change. Consent is expressed by the instructor’s signature on the schedule containing all information regarding the IOS. If it is not possible to obtain the signature in time to submit the application, consent may be expressed in the form of an email sent by the instructor to the student from their university email account. Without the instructor’s consent, it is not possible to obtain approval for an individual mode and/or deadline for completing a course taught by that instructor.
Studying under the Individual Organisation of Studies does not exempt the student from the obligation to achieve the learning outcomes specified in the study programme. This means that the student is required to complete all courses included in the study programme, with the possibility that, by decision of the Vice-Dean for Student Affairs, equivalent courses or activities fulfilling the learning outcomes specified in the programme may be recognised.
